dislike the idea that a ‘happy ending’ is base and boring
that an ending that is depressing and angsty and full of darkness automatically makes it “something more”

I feel like it’s a reflection of the society we’ve built over the past decade or so. Being nice or kind is more seen as weakness. This has especially become true in the US over the past five years. Nowadays, anyone who shows kindness or concern for others is a “snowflake”. Try to point out someone’s unkindness, and you’re “triggered”.
